Ever heard of Soundtrap? It’s very much like an online version of GarageBand that works on all operating systems. You will learn how to navigate the digital audio space, save and share your progress and collaborate with other students your age! So join us as we partner with soundtrap education allowing you to get started right away with little to no equipment necessary. About
Marcus Akeem
Growing up as a quirky suburban homeschooler from South Jersey, Marcus Akeem has almost always marched to the rhythm of his own drum. A maestro of all trades, Marcus is free to express his artistic versatility not only as a singer-songwriter, but as a producer, arranger and engineer in his private studio space, modeling an ingenuity akin to artists like Pharrell Williams, CeeLo Green and Kanye West.
Marcus started his company entitled "Mars Productions" shortly after the pandemic. Whether classes were online, held in person or a hybrid of both, he was determined to find ways to manage classes and keep students engaged in learning music. He discovered and implemented a whole new world of technological possibilities, such as interactive music theory games, YouTube music instructional videos, music production collaborations, streamed listening activities and so much more. Using Soundtrap's DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), he has developed a curriculum that incorporates piano and vocal instruction, music theory, composition techniques and audio engineering.
Marcus has three years of professional experience as an elementary music
and computer science teacher and is currently enrolled in Wilmington University's Masters in General Education program. He has ample experience with one on one virtual piano and voice lessons through Melissa T. Music Company and worked closely with Concorde Education program teaching music production in a variety of after school programs.
School Workshops
Mars productions has partnered with Concorde Education in teaching music production workshops to students in both Los Angeles and the DMV area through various after school programs. Scattered below are pictures of students learning how to make beats within Dover Middle School's (Dover, DE) 21st century learning initiative and Catskill’s Elementary (Carson, CA) STEAM program. THE MISSION
There are many students who love listening to music and yet fall victim to methods of music instruction that are extremely restricting and boring. However, music should be a tool that empowers creativity and expression. The musical principles and values of antiquity need to be adapted and made relevant to the 21st century. Students are most motivated to learn music theory when creating with similar tools and technologies that are used to make modern music.
Mars Productions’ curriculum is designed to engage students in music by way of music production and song-writing. Students will learn how to create their own original songs by learning to master music theory, lyric writing, arranging, instrumentation and beat-making. Learning is facilitated by a live instructor, either in person or virtually, through detailed step-by-step directions, monitoring, and regular assessment practices. Students are taught how to navigate and edit using SoundTrap for Educations’ (DAW) Digital Audio Workstation. Concepts for instruction are directed toward producing a series of projects that are largely oriented around the individual’s or class interest and goals. Collaborations are also highly incentivized. Students learn the fundamentals of an instrument by choosing a concentration (keyboard, drums, or voice) to correspond with producing. Each unit is also intertwined with music history facts, engineering tips, and production terms. Students have easy online access to project files and are inspired to continue creating beyond the classroom. Students will be able to download their digital artifacts and share it with the world. Mars Production is consistent with both NCAS (National Core Arts Standards) and STEAM Programming (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Music).
